Shindig Done
The Council's Fall Recruitment Shindig was held on June 20, at the William Lyon Homes Center for Scouting with a BBQ dinner followed by a recruitment training session. District Executives and guests dressed in their cowboy best and enjoyed some good eats as they learned about the Council's fall school recruitment plans. School recruitment strategy includes distribution of flyers to non-Scouting families, “boy talks” in local elementary schools, as well as special recruitment nights for boys and their parents. If you missed the Shindig, go to Fall Recruitment Forms for information and tools about how to plan a successful school recruitment night in your neighborhood.

Program Aides Needed!
Make a difference in a child's life...
The Council’s Scoutreach and Soccer and Scouting programs are looking for energetic and enthusiastic individuals to join our team of part-time program aides. Scoutreach is an outreach program that allows “at-risk” kids to participate in Scouting, providing funding for such things as books, camp scholarships, Scout trips, membership dues and staff support which help create a positive experience for over 5,000 youth in Orange County. Successful candidates may already be teachers, community workers, college students or adult leaders. Bilingual English/Spanish helpful, but not required. Soccer and Scouting aides must understand the basic principles of soccer. Program aides conduct weekly Scout meetings, run games and activities and help train parents. Scouting or youth experience is a plus, but not required. All applicants must be 18 or older.
Qualified applicants can e-mail a cover letter and resume to Oscar Santoyo at oscars@ocbsa.org or fax 714-546-0415. Applications are also available at the William Lyon Homes Center for Scouting, 1211 East Dyer Road, Santa Ana, CA 92705.
For more information on these positions or the Orange County Council Boy Scouts of America Outreach programs, please contact at the Outreach Division at 714-546-4990, ext. 125

Q&A
Q: I would like to know if there is any Orange County Council requirement to wear official BSA Uniforms (Class A or Class B) when traveling to or from an event - in order to be covered by the Council's insurance policy?
A: The answer is - No. Uniforms are not required while traveling and the Orange County Council has not added such a requirement. However, uniforms for Scout activities and travel is a very good idea, and units may want to consider a unit-level policy requiring it as it's easier to spot kids, and they generally will behave like Scouts! Requiring a Scout uniform or unit t-shirt for all tour-permitted travel is purely a unit-level decision.
Requiring boys to wear uniforms also makes it easier for units to comply with items 6 & 7 in the tour permit section titled, “Our Pledge of Performance.” In fact, National policy does not require a uniform for youth or adult membership. Therefore, if a unit policy requests uniforms for all boys, then we hope the unit will help families that may not be able to afford a uniform.
Men of Character Recognition Dinner
Eight Orange County men were honored and celebrated by their family, friends and business associates on May 24 in Huntington Beach. The event raised over $140,000 for Scouting in Orange County. A committee of local professionals and community leaders selected Terrance Barry, Peter Bastone, Dr. Juris Bunkis, Donald Hunsberger, Jeff Iverson, Robert Lambert, Russell Leatherby and Patrick McCullagh as 2006 Men of Character.
Chairing the event was Orange County Council Executive Board member and Saddleback District volunteer, Ralph Linzmeier and Latino OC 100 honoree and 2003 Man of Character, Manny Montanez. Ralph and 2005 honoree, Bill Steed, also a Saddleback volunteer, founded the event in 2000 as an avenue to recognize outstanding individuals in south Orange County.

Standing: Don Hunsberger, Bob Lambert, Jeff Iverson, Russ Leatherby, Dr. Juris Bunkis, Peter Bastone,
Patrick McCullagh, Terrance Barry and John Tomczak, seated.
