Rancho Las Flores Camp Closure
After 35 years of Day Camps, Robinhood and Little John's Archery for Cub Scouts, leadership trainings in the barn, Partner's and Pal's, Halloween Carnivals and memorable unit weekend camping, Rancho Las Flores will be closing at the end of 2007. As many of you know, Rancho las Flores has an historic adobe and other historic sites on the property. Over the last few years the Camp Pendleton Marine Base has put over $1,000,000 into the restoration of the adobe and has just completed their historic asset management plan. Unfortunately, we do not fit into this new management plan. After several months of negotiations and meetings with base personnel, they have decided not to renew our lease. Therefore, 2007 will be our last year overseeing Rancho Las Flores.

However, we will offer all of our wonderful weekend events throughout the year with the grand finale being the Halloween Carnival at the end of October. November and December will be utilized to physically clean-up and vacate the camp. So from now until the end of October, we will be conducting a "Farewell Tour" of sorts for our beloved Rancho Las Flores. During each of our special event weekends, we will celebrate a generation of Cub and Scout camping. We will offer our signature stellar programming and some fun events, as well as some commemorative camp items, like T-shirts, patches and various other camp collectibles.

The silver lining perhaps to this unfortunate camp closure is that it will occur only a few months before the opening of the new Outdoor Education Center next to Irvine Regional Park, and also immediately available are the many outstanding programs offered at Oso Lake Boy Scout Camp in Rancho Santa Margarita. Also, please keep in mind, this expired lease with Camp Pendleton doesn't necessarily mean Rancho Las Flores with not be available to Scout units in the future. When the new tenant takes over the lease, we feel very hopeful they will want to continue to offer the camp amenities to all youth groups around Southern California.

We look forward to serving you and your families this year at Rancho Las Flores. If you would like to take part in the camp wrap-up process or the Camp Farewell Tour please email our Sr. Campmaster, Larry Keener at rlfsrcampmaster@cox.net and indicate "RLF Camp Closure" in the subject line. We will have a huge need for help with basic clean-up, moving of camp equipment and supplies to the other camps and camp memorabilia rummage sales.

If you have any specific follow-up questions about the camp closure, please contact our Director of Camping, Marty Cutrone by phone at 714-546-4990 ext. 146 or by email at MartyC@ocbsa.org.
